Engelbrecht: heraldry, people and places
Engelbrecht appears in heraldry, art history, science and place names, but these connections do not form one genealogy. Sweden’s Riddarhuset documents a particular von Engelbrechten branch; sharing a similar surname does not automatically confer entitlement to its arms. Martin Engelbrecht is associated with eighteenth-century paper dioramas, Andries Engelbrecht with computational intelligence, and Jüri Engelbrecht with the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Australia also has Engelbrecht Cave. This chapter presents documented examples of the name in culture and geography. It implies neither kinship with Engelbrecht Foundation’s founders nor collaboration with the company. The Foundation’s modern logo is a contemporary brand identity.
Arms relate to a particular family
Riddarhuset maintains an account of the von Engelbrechten family associated with Greifswald. This is evidence concerning a particular branch, not everyone called Engelbrecht.
HEROLD explains the importance of establishing family membership in heraldic questions. Finding an image labelled “Engelbrecht coat of arms” cannot substitute for genealogical evidence. We do not attribute the illustration retained on our main history page to this branch without verification.
Martin Engelbrecht: paper worlds
The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a paper theatre or diorama of an Italianate villa and garden published by Martin Engelbrecht of Augsburg. Dated approximately 1730–1756, the object has accession number 2014.776.
Its layered image planes create a spatial view. The museum record provides a documented example of the surname in printmaking and visual storytelling.
Andries and Jüri Engelbrecht: scientific connections
Andries Engelbrecht, associated with Stellenbosch University, works in computational intelligence. His books include Computational Intelligence: An Introduction and Fundamentals of Computational Swarm Intelligence. This offers an interesting context for an AI startup’s website, without implying collaboration or affiliation.
Jüri Engelbrecht led the Estonian Academy of Sciences from 1994 to 2004, as confirmed by the Academy’s own history. A shared surname does not establish a family relationship between the two scholars.

Engelbrecht Cave and the Foundation’s identity
Engelbrecht Cave is in Mount Gambier, South Australia. The Cave Divers Association of Australia associates its name with Carl Engelbrecht, a German immigrant who settled there in the nineteenth century.
Engelbrecht Foundation’s visual identity combines heraldic inspiration with technology. It is a modern brand symbol, not proof of nobility, a historical blazon or evidence that the founders descend from the families discussed here.
